Alike the rest of the globe, Canada has a large shortage of veterinary professionals, and is currently requiring an increase of veterinary professionals throughout 2024.
There are many visa options and pathways available to work in Canada as a veterinary professional. 3 of the most commonly used are the Temporary work permit, The Express Entry and the Provincial Nominee program. For non-Canadian nationals seeking to work as veterinarians or veterinary professional in Canada, securing the appropriate visa and work permit is a crucial step. Here’s a brief overview of the visa requirements for these professionals:
Temporary Work Permit:
This is one of the most commonly used visas. Veterinary professionals will require a temporary work permit to work in Canada. In order to obtain this, you must have the following:
- A job offer from a Canadian employer.
Your employer will then reach out to apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from the Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). The LMIA confirms that there is a genuine need for a foreign worker and that no Canadian citizen or permanent resident is available to fill the position. Once the LMIA is approved, the candidate can apply for a temporary work permit.
Express Entry:
This is commonly used for individuals who are looking to seek a permanent move and residency within Canada. The Express entry is a point-based system that ranks you within the Express Entry pool under three immigration programs:
- The Federal Skilled worker program
- The Federal skilled trades program
- The Canadian experience Class.
Candidates are ranked based on age, language proficiency, education and work experience. If you are invited to apply, individuals are able to migrate through employment and gain permanent residency.
Provincial Nominee Program (PNP):
Every province and territory within Canada (with the sole exception of Qubec) has its own PNP, which will allow them to nominate workers for remanent residency based on the local province market and needs. This can be used as a great pathway for veterinary professionals who have a connection to a specific territory (job offer, family, schooling, previous experience)
