There are many visa options available to individuals who are looking to relocate and work in America.
The most commonly used visas for veterinary professionals are the ‘Skilled Shortage Visa’, ‘ANZSCO Visa’ and the ‘Working Holiday Visa’. All of these visas will require the following:
- Qualified Veterinary professional
- Under the age of 45
- Fluent in English
482 Skilled Shortage Visa
The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482) replaced the old 457 visa. This visa allows you to stay up to two years, with unrestricted travel in and out of the country. The skills shortage visa is a pathway to permanent residency should you decide to stay longer.
The Skilled Occupation List is available to all vets and vet nurses, are available to individuals qualified to work in the eligible skilled occupations.
TSS visa holders can work in Australia in their nominated occupation for their approved sponsor under one of three streams:
- Short term (Up to 2 years)
- Long term (Up to 4 years)
- Labour Agreement (employer discretion)
Working Holiday Visa
The working holiday visa is becoming less popular with the increase in visa changes to entice veterinarians to work in Australia, and the ability to gain sponsorship from the employer. The age limit for Australian Working Holiday VISA has recently been raised to 35 from 30!
- Must be 18 to 35
- Valid for up to 12 months
- Have a valid DVM degree from an accredited institution
ANZSCO Visa
ANZSCO is short for ‘Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations’. ANZSCO publishes the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), where only 176 occupations including Veterinarians have made. Its important to note that there are 3 types of ANZSCO visas available such as 457 Temporary skilled visa, 482 Skilled visa and the 190 Skilled Nominated visa. To be eligible for this visa, you must meet the following:
- Hold a valid DVM degree from an accredited institution
- Have at least three years of relevant work experience
- Pass the Australian English Language Benchmark (AELB) test
- Obtain a Skills Assessment by the Veterinary Registration Board of Australia (VRBA)
- Have a job offer from an Australian employer
