We are recruiting for an experienced Locum Veterinary Surgeon to provide ongoing cover at a friendly, established small animal practice in North Yorkshire, within easy reach of York.
This is an ASAP ongoing requirement, offering regular weekday work, plenty of breaks throughout the working day, no OOH and an accommodation allowance of up to £50 per night for locums travelling into the area.
The position is predominantly sole charge, so the practice is looking for a confident and experienced GP vet who is comfortable with consultations and routine surgery. The practice also sees a high number of Caesarean sections, so confidence with surgical cases is important.

The Practice
This is a well-established small animal practice located within easy reach of York, with a long-standing local client base and an experienced veterinary, nursing and support team.
The practice is very well equipped for an independent first-opinion environment, with facilities including:
- Digital radiography.
- Dental radiography.
- Multiple ultrasound scanners.
- Video endoscopy.
- In-house blood analysis.
- Laser surgical equipment.
- Diathermy.
- Advanced anaesthetic monitoring including capnography, ECG, blood pressure and pulse oximetry.
- Critical-care and neonatal facilities.
- 3D diagnostic imaging.
- Dedicated surgical facilities.
The caseload includes general first-opinion consultations, preventative healthcare, medical investigations and a broad surgical caseload.
The Role
The locum will provide regular ongoing cover and will need to be comfortable working predominantly sole charge.
Typical duties will include:
- First-opinion consultations.
- Routine surgical procedures.
- Medical work-ups.
- Diagnostics.
- Vaccinations and preventative healthcare.
- Emergency cases arising during the working day.
- Caesarean sections and associated surgical cases.
- General inpatient and clinical care.
The practice sees a higher-than-average number of Caesarean sections, so the role would particularly suit a vet who is confident surgically and comfortable managing these cases.
The working day is generally 9:00am until approximately 5:30pm–6:00pm, with some flexibility available and plenty of breaks built into the day.
Ideally, the locum would also help with approximately 1 in 3 Saturday mornings from 9:00am–11:00am, although there is flexibility around the Saturday requirement.
There are no OOH requirements attached to the locum position.
The Candidate
We are looking for an experienced RCVS registered Veterinary Surgeon who is:
- Confident working sole charge.
- Comfortable with routine surgery.
- Confident with a varied first-opinion caseload.
- Comfortable managing Caesarean sections.
- Experienced with consultations and general medicine.
- Able to work independently while communicating effectively with the nursing and support team.
- Available for regular ongoing cover.
