Out of Hours ECC Veterinary Surgeon | West Yorkshire

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon to join the dedicated night team at a large, RCVS-accredited 24/7 Small Animal Hospital and Emergency Service Centre in West Yorkshire.

Offering a salary of £55,000–£60,000 depending on experience and an attractive 7 nights on, 14 nights off rota, this is a genuine ECC hospital position providing exposure to complex medical emergencies, emergency surgery and critically ill inpatients, with an experienced RVN and support team working alongside you throughout the night.

The Practice

This family-run small animal hospital was established in 2012 and has developed into an advanced 24-hour RCVS-accredited Hospital and Emergency Service Centre, combining a busy first opinion service with hospital, referral and Emergency & Critical Care.

The hospital provides OOH and referral support to a substantial number of surrounding veterinary practices, generating an interesting and genuinely varied emergency caseload rather than simply providing overnight inpatient supervision.

The wider team comprises approximately 70 colleagues, including around 15 Veterinary Surgeons, alongside extensive day and night nursing, VCA, reception and support teams.

There is considerable postgraduate expertise throughout the hospital, with clinicians holding or working towards qualifications across Emergency & Critical Care, Small Animal Surgery, Internal Medicine, Dentistry, Endosurgery, Anaesthesia and Analgesia.

The dedicated night structure means you aren't expected to manage the hospital completely alone. A typical OOH team includes:

• One OOH Veterinary Surgeon.
• One experienced Senior RVN.
• Two Veterinary Care Assistants.
• Reception support during the evening.
• Additional twilight RVN support until midnight.

The day veterinary team also provides valuable clinical continuity and access to certificate holders for discussion and management of more challenging cases.

The Location

Located in West Yorkshire, the hospital is well positioned for candidates travelling from across the wider Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and surrounding areas.

The location benefits from excellent access to the regional motorway network, making it accessible from a broad area of West Yorkshire.

Free onsite parking with 24/7 access is available, particularly useful for colleagues working overnight shifts.

Please note that accommodation is not provided with this position, so candidates will need to be within a suitable commuting distance or arrange their own accommodation.

The Role

This is a dedicated Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon position working seven consecutive nights followed by 14 nights off.

You'll take responsibility for emergency presentations and hospitalised patients overnight, supported by an experienced night nursing and VCA team.

Importantly, 30-minute OOH consultations are provided as standard, allowing appropriate time to assess emergency and complex presentations.

This is a clinically involved ECC position and the night team regularly manages both emergency surgical and complex medical cases.

Emergency surgical procedures commonly include:

• Caesarean sections.
• Pyometra surgery.
• Exploratory laparotomy.
• Enterotomy.
• Enterectomy.
• Emergency wound management.

Medical cases regularly include patients presenting with:

• Addisonian crises.
• Diabetic ketoacidosis.
• Severe pancreatitis.
• Acute medical emergencies.
• Critically ill hospitalised patients.

As an advanced hospital, the night team is also expected to undertake or develop competence in procedures including:

• Oesophageal feeding tube placement.
• Seldinger chest drain placement.
• Silicone abdominal peritoneal drains.
• Pigtail urinary catheter placement.
• TFAST and AFAST.
• Endoscopy.
• Negative Pressure Wound Therapy.
• Urinary catheterisation.

Support and training can be provided around these more advanced procedures where appropriate.

The 7 nights on, 14 nights off rota also provides extended periods away from the hospital, and the practice is supportive of clinicians undertaking additional locum work during their time off if they wish.

The Candidate

The successful candidate will be an experienced RCVS-registered Veterinary Surgeon with previous Emergency & Critical Care experience.

ECC experience is essential for this particular vacancy.

You'll need solid medical and surgical skills and be comfortable assessing and stabilising emergency presentations, managing critically ill inpatients and undertaking emergency surgery when required.

You'll also need to be confident making clinical decisions overnight while working collaboratively with the experienced night nursing team.

The position would particularly suit a Vet who enjoys the challenge and variety of ECC and wants to continue developing advanced emergency procedures within a well-equipped hospital environment.

A proactive approach, strong communication skills and commitment to excellent patient and client care will be essential.
