The Practice
This family-run small animal hospital was established in 2012 and has developed into a large 24-hour RCVS-accredited Hospital and Emergency Service Centre, combining a thriving first opinion service with advanced hospital, emergency and referral-level care.
The hospital also provides out-of-hours and referral support to a substantial number of surrounding veterinary practices, creating an unusually broad and interesting caseload.
The wider team comprises more than 60 colleagues, with Veterinary Surgeons and RVNs holding postgraduate qualifications and developing advanced interests across areas including Small Animal Medicine, Surgery, Emergency & Critical Care, Dentistry, Anaesthesia and Analgesia.
This depth of expertise provides excellent support when managing more complicated cases while also creating an environment where clinicians can continue learning from one another.
The hospital has expanded significantly in recent years, with its clinical space substantially increased to provide additional capacity for diagnostics, surgery, hospitalisation, training and professional development.
Unlike a conventional first opinion practice, cases can often remain within the hospital throughout their investigation and treatment, providing excellent continuity and allowing Vets to become involved with more advanced case work-ups.
Facilities and services include:
• CT imaging.
• Advanced ultrasonography.
• Digital radiography.
• ECG.
• Extensive in-house laboratory facilities.
• Purpose-built dental facilities and dental radiography.
• Rigid and flexible endoscopy.
• Dedicated laparoscopic/keyhole surgery facilities.
• Advanced soft tissue surgery.
• Orthopaedic surgery.
• Fracture repair.
• Advanced dentistry.
• Internal medicine case work-ups.
• Emergency & Critical Care.
• Advanced anaesthesia and multiparameter monitoring.
• Dedicated inpatient facilities.
• 24-hour hospitalisation and patient care.
The Location
Located in West Yorkshire, the hospital is well positioned for Veterinary Surgeons travelling from across the wider Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and surrounding areas.
Excellent motorway connections provide convenient access from across West Yorkshire, while the location also offers straightforward access to Leeds city centre and the wider Yorkshire region.
The hospital benefits from free onsite parking with 24/7 access, making it convenient for colleagues working across different hospital shift patterns.
The Role
This is a permanent full-time Day Veterinary Surgeon position working 40 hours per week, including participation in a 1 in 4 weekend rota.
The weekday rota provides excellent clinical variety rather than expecting the successful Vet to spend the majority of their week consulting.
A typical week consists of:
• Two consulting shifts.
• One dedicated surgical shift.
• One dedicated hospital/inpatient shift.
• 35 weekday hours across Monday to Friday.
• 1 in 4 weekends as part of the overall 40-hour contracted average.
Consulting shifts benefit from 30-minute appointments for sick pets as standard, providing appropriate time to investigate cases and discuss treatment options with clients.
The dedicated surgical day provides regular opportunity to maintain and develop operative skills, while the hospital shift gives you responsibility for the ongoing investigation, treatment and management of inpatients.
Weekend work is supported by a full hospital team, with multiple Veterinary Surgeons working across ECC, sick-pet consultations, inpatient care and emergency procedures.
With dedicated OOH clinicians providing overnight care, you'll also benefit from genuine continuity for patients requiring hospitalisation.
The Candidate
The successful candidate will be an RCVS-registered Veterinary Surgeon who is comfortable managing a varied small animal caseload across consultations, medicine and routine surgery.
You'll ideally have sufficient experience to manage your own caseload while recognising when to utilise the considerable expertise available within the wider hospital team.
This role would particularly suit someone who enjoys working cases up rather than immediately referring them elsewhere and wants access to a broader range of medical, surgical and hospital cases.
Experience or an interest in ophthalmology or dermatology would be particularly welcomed, with potential scope to further develop these areas and potentially establish dedicated clinics.
The hospital is also well suited to a Vet wanting to develop towards a certificate or build further expertise in medicine, surgery, dentistry, diagnostic imaging or ECC.
Please note that visa sponsorship is not currently being offered for this vacancy, so applicants will need to already have appropriate permission to work in the UK.
Benefits
• Salary up to £60,000 per annum, depending on experience.
• Permanent full-time contract.
• 40 hours per week.
• 1 in 4 weekend rota.
• Structured mix of consulting, surgery and inpatient work.
• 30-minute sick-pet consultations as standard.
• £1,000 annual CPD allowance.
• Certificate development and sponsorship encouraged.
• Regular in-house CPD and clinical training.
• Paid RCVS, VDS and BSAVA memberships.
• Contributory pension scheme.
• Extensive certificate-holder support.
• Exposure to complex medical and surgical cases.
• Advanced hospital and diagnostic facilities.
• Dedicated OOH clinical team.
• Mental Health First Aider within the management team.
• Supportive clinical discussion and development culture.
• Exclusive colleague discounts and rewards.
• Free onsite parking.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a Veterinary Surgeon looking for a genuine day hospital position offering a structured balance between consultations, surgery and inpatient medicine. With a salary up to £60,000, 1 in 4 weekends, 30-minute sick-pet consultations, advanced ho spital facilities and extensive certificate-holder support, the role provides excellent scope to develop clinically while working within an established 24-hour hospital team.
