An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Veterinary Surgeon to join an RCVS-accredited 24-hour Small Animal Hospital and Emergency Service Clinic in South Yorkshire. Established for more than 20 years, the hospital combines a busy first opinion caseload with advanced surgical, diagnostic, emergency and referral-level services, providing an exceptional environment for continued clinical development.

The practice is open to Veterinary Surgeons at all stages of their career, from new graduates requiring structured support through to experienced clinicians looking to undertake certificates or develop advanced clinical interests. Full-time, part-time and even weekend-only working patterns can be considered.

The Practice

This is a substantial, locally owned 24-hour veterinary hospital, established in 2002 and developed over the past two decades into an advanced multidisciplinary clinical centre.

The vacancy describes a clinical team including 15 Veterinary Surgeons, 24 RVNs, three Student Veterinary Nurses and five Animal Care Assistants, alongside a dedicated OOH team and extensive non-clinical support.

The current practice website shows the hospital has continued to grow and now employs more than 80 colleagues, providing an unusually extensive level of clinical, nursing, referral and operational support.

The senior veterinary team has considerable postgraduate expertise. This includes an Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery with postgraduate qualifications in small animal surgery, endoscopy, endosurgery, anaesthesia and analgesia; a Veterinary Surgeon with advanced qualifications and a particular interest in orthopaedic and knee surgery; and a certificate holder in diagnostic imaging and ultrasound. Other clinicians have interests including dermatology, ophthalmology, surgery and dentistry.

The nursing team is equally experienced, including RVNs holding certificates in anaesthesia, surgical nursing and Emergency & Critical Care, together with colleagues trained in hydrotherapy and rehabilitation. This provides excellent multidisciplinary support when managing more complex surgical, hospital and emergency patients.

The hospital manages first opinion cases alongside advanced and referral work, allowing patients to remain within the same clinical environment from initial investigation through surgery, hospitalisation and rehabilitation.

The Location

Located in South Yorkshire, the hospital is well positioned for candidates travelling from across the wider region, including Sheffield, Wakefield, Rotherham and surrounding areas.

The area benefits from strong road connections across Yorkshire while also providing easy access to the Peak District and surrounding countryside.

The hospital is open 24 hours a day, seven days per week and has onsite parking available.

The Role

The practice is deliberately flexible regarding experience level and working pattern and is happy to discuss full-time, part-time or weekend-only positions.

All Veterinary Surgeons participate in the weekend rota, which is approximately:

• 1 in 2 weekends for full-time Veterinary Surgeons.
• 1 in 4 weekends for part-time Veterinary Surgeons.

The hospital has its own dedicated OOH clinical team, providing round-the-clock patient care and emergency cover.

You'll work with an interesting combination of routine first opinion cases and more complex medical and surgical patients, with the facilities and clinical expertise available to investigate and work cases up to a high standard.

Depending on your experience and interests, there is potential for exposure to orthopaedics, advanced soft tissue surgery, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, laparoscopy, neurosurgery, emergency medicine and rehabilitation.

Experienced clinicians looking to develop towards certificates are actively encouraged, while less experienced Vets can benefit from working alongside a substantial team of experienced Veterinary Surgeons and RVNs.

The Candidate

The practice is open to applications from Veterinary Surgeons across different stages of their careers.

An experienced Veterinary Surgeon should be comfortable managing routine surgical and medical cases and interested in developing more complex cases within a hospital environment.

Equally, newly qualified Veterinary Surgeons will be considered, particularly those looking for their first position within a large clinical team where they can gain exposure to an unusually broad caseload while receiving support from experienced colleagues.

You'll have a genuine interest in providing excellent standards of patient care, enjoy working cases up thoroughly and be comfortable collaborating with a large multidisciplinary team.

The hospital would be particularly attractive to a Vet with an existing interest—or ambitions to develop—in surgery, diagnostic imaging, ECC, orthopaedics, endoscopy, medicine or other advanced clinical disciplines.
