An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Out of Hours ECC Veterinary Surgeon to join a busy, family-run 24/7 Small Animal Hospital in West Yorkshire. Offering a salary of £55,000 to £60,000 and an attractive 7 nights on, 14 nights off rota, this position provides the opportunity to manage a genuinely varied emergency and critical care caseload within an advanced hospital environment, supported by dedicated night nursing colleagues and an experienced multidisciplinary clinical team.

The Practice
This modern and progressive 24/7 Small Animal Hospital and Emergency Service Clinic has been established for over a decade and provides out-of-hours and referral support to 16 surrounding veterinary practices alongside its busy first opinion service.
This combination creates an exceptionally varied caseload, with the facilities and clinical expertise available to work up complex cases in-house and provide continuity of care from initial presentation through to advanced treatment and hospitalisation.
You'll be joining a substantial team of approximately 70 colleagues, including 15 Veterinary Surgeons alongside dedicated day and night nursing and Veterinary Care Assistant teams. The clinical team includes certificate holders across surgery, medicine, dentistry and endosurgery, providing an excellent network of support for complex cases and continued professional development.
The dedicated overnight team provides strong clinical support, with night nursing and VCA cover alongside additional twilight nursing support until midnight.

The Location
Located in West Yorkshire, the hospital is ideally positioned for access across Leeds, Bradford and the wider Yorkshire region, with excellent road connections via the M62 and M1 motorway networks.
The area offers an excellent combination of city amenities and easy access to the Yorkshire countryside, making it well suited to anyone wanting to combine a challenging hospital position with plenty of time away from work.
The Role
This permanent Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon position works an attractive 7 nights on, 14 nights off rota as part of the hospital's dedicated emergency and critical care service.
You'll manage emergency presentations alongside complex medical and surgical inpatients, with 30-minute OOH consultations provided as standard.
The caseload is significantly more advanced than a typical first opinion night position and regularly includes emergency procedures such as caesareans, pyometra surgery and exploratory laparotomies with enterotomy and enterectomy.
Medical cases include patients presenting with conditions such as Addisonian crises, diabetic ketoacidosis and severe pancreatitis.
As part of an advanced hospital environment, the night team is also expected, with appropriate training and support, to undertake procedures including:
• Oesophageal feeding tube placement.
• Seldinger chest drain placement.
• Silicone abdominal peritoneal drains.
• Pigtail urinary catheter placement.
• TFAST and AFAST ultrasound.
• Endoscopy.
• Negative pressure wound therapy.
• Urinary catheterisation.
The hospital has a strong focus on clinical development, with regular in-house CPD alongside a £1,500 annual CPD allowance and support for further certificates.
The Candidate
The successful candidate will be an experienced Veterinary Surgeon with a strong background or demonstrable experience in Emergency and Critical Care.
You'll need solid medical and surgical skills and the confidence to manage complex emergency presentations and hospitalised patients during overnight shifts. You'll be proactive, clinically capable and comfortable making decisions within a busy hospital environment while working closely with the dedicated night nursing team.
A collaborative approach is essential, together with excellent communication skills and a genuine interest in delivering high standards of emergency and critical patient care.
