Veterinary Surgeon | Watford & Borehamwood, Hertfordshire
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Veterinary Surgeon to join a highly experienced clinical team working across a 24-hour hospital and established first opinion practice in Hertfordshire. Offering a salary of up to £72,000 DOE, this permanent role combines the variety of hospital work with the continuity of first opinion practice. The full-time rota is typically split across 2 days at the 24-hour hospital and 2 days at the first opinion practice, with excellent clinical support from experienced Partners and Advanced Practitioners, alongside approximately 1 day of sole charge per week, occasionally 2 days.
Key Highlights
• Salary up to £72,000 DOE.
• Permanent Veterinary Surgeon position.
• Full-time and part-time applications considered.
• Full-time rota typically worked across 4 days per week.

• 2 days per week within an established first opinion practice.
• Approximately 1 day of sole charge per week, occasionally 2 days.

The Practice
This is a particularly varied opportunity combining work across two complementary clinical environments within Hertfordshire.
Two days each week are typically spent within a well-equipped 24-hour veterinary hospital, providing exposure to a broad range of first opinion, hospital and more complex cases. The remaining two days are based within an established first opinion practice, allowing you to develop continuity with clients, manage your own caseload and build lasting relationships with patients and their owners.
A major strength of the position is the level of clinical experience available across the team. The sites are supported by three experienced Partners, including Advanced Practitioners with expertise in small animal orthopaedics and medicine, alongside cardiology experience and a Partner currently studying towards a postgraduate qualification in small animal surgery.
This creates an excellent environment for case discussion, collaboration and professional development while still providing the autonomy to manage cases independently.

The area provides a good combination of town amenities, restaurants, shopping and green spaces while remaining extremely well connected for commuting.
The Role
This is a permanent Veterinary Surgeon position offering an excellent combination of hospital medicine, first opinion practice, clinical support and autonomy.
For a full-time Veterinary Surgeon, the working week would typically consist of:
• 2 days per week at the 24-hour hospital.
• 2 days per week at the first opinion practice.
• Approximately 1 day of sole charge per week, although this may occasionally increase to 2 days.
• 1 in 6 weekends based at the 24-hour hospital.
• Participation in a shared Bank Holiday on-call rota.
Part-time applications are also welcomed, including candidates looking for approximately 30 hours per week, with flexibility available around the working pattern.
You'll manage a varied caseload encompassing consultations, routine surgery, dentistry, medical cases and hospital work. Although there is some sole-charge responsibility, this is predominantly a well-supported position with access to highly experienced clinicians and advanced facilities.
The combination of hospital and branch work makes this particularly suitable for a Veterinary Surgeon who enjoys variety and wants to continue developing clinically without sacrificing continuity of care or independence.
The Candidate
You will be an RCVS-registered Veterinary Surgeon comfortable managing a varied small animal first opinion caseload.
You'll need to be confident with consultations, routine surgical procedures and dentistry, together with being comfortable undertaking some sole-charge work. You should enjoy working collaboratively and be keen to take advantage of the substantial clinical expertise available across the team.
The position could suit Veterinary Surgeons with a variety of clinical interests, particularly someone looking for a role offering both autonomy and access to advanced hospital-level support.
