An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced OOH ECC Veterinary Surgeon to join a well-established 24/7 Small Animal Hospital in Leeds Birstall. This role is ideal for a night vet who thrives in emergency and critical care, enjoys managing complex cases, and values working within a highly skilled, supportive hospital team.
This position has become available due to an internal move, and the hospital is keen to welcome a confident ECC vet who is passionate about delivering the highest standards of emergency care.
The Hospital
Leeds Birstall is a busy, well-equipped 24/7 Small Animal Hospital providing advanced emergency, medical and surgical care to the local community and surrounding practices. The hospital operates with strong overnight staffing and excellent in-house support, ensuring high-quality patient care throughout the night.
You will work alongside an experienced out-of-hours nursing team, with reception cover until late evening and additional twilight RVN support, allowing you to focus on clinical decision-making and patient care.
The hospital benefits from in-house certificate holders across surgery, medicine and dentistry, with additional advanced imaging support available when required.
The Role
This is a dedicated OOH ECC Veterinary Surgeon position, working a structured night rota designed to support work–life balance.

7 nights on, 14 nights off

Night shifts: 8:00pm – 8:00am
-
Working alongside an OOH RVN and OOH VCA
-
Reception support until 10:00pm
-
Additional twilight RVN support until midnight
-
Opportunity to locum elsewhere during the 14 days off
This role offers excellent exposure to a true ECC caseload, with regular surgical and medical emergencies managed in-house overnight.
Clinical Exposure & Expectations
As an advanced practice, the night team is supported and trained to deliver a high level of emergency and critical care. Regular procedures and case management include:

Oesophageal tube placements
-
Seldinger chest drain placements
-
Silicone abdominal peritoneal drains
-
Pigtail urinary catheter placement
-
TFAST and AFAST
-
Endoscopy
-
Negative pressure wound therapy
-
Urinary catheterisation
The night team routinely manages complex surgical emergencies including:

Caesarean sections
-
Pyometra
-
Exploratory laparotomy
-
Enterotomy and enterectomy
Medical case exposure regularly includes:

Addisonian crises
-
Diabetic ketoacidosis
-
Severe pancreatitis cases
Facilities & Equipment
The hospital is exceptionally well equipped to support advanced emergency and critical care, including:

ProCyte haematology

Catalyst Dx biochemistry

EPOC blood gas analysis

Coagulation testing (APTT / PT)

SNAP testing (Angio, FeLV, FIV, Giardia, Parvo, Lepto)

Transfusion medicine and lipid infusions

Digital radiography

Advanced ultrasound with Doppler

Visiting CT for follow-up investigations

Flexible video gastroscope and bronchoscope

Video otoscope and rigid endoscope

Dental X-ray with CR7 developer

Multiparameter monitoring (ECG, capnography, temperature, SpO2, BP)

Doppler blood pressure

ECG
-
Gen11 vessel sealing

Valleylab monopolar and bipolar diathermy with Ligaclips

E20 sterilisation system
What We're Looking For
-
RCVS-registered Veterinary Surgeon
-
Experience or strong interest in ECC and OOH work
-
Confident managing emergency medical and surgical cases
-
Comfortable working independently overnight with strong nursing support

Keen to work within a structured hospital environment

Open to ongoing training and development
Salary & Benefits

Salary: £60,000 per annum

Must Haves
- RCVS Registered (or soon to be)
- Possess the right to work in the United Kingdom
